With Ilhabela showing a high demographical growth, risk of deterioration in the quality of life, concerns on security, environment, disorderly occupation, urbanism, employment and drugs, the 'Manifest of the Movement for a More Beautiful Island' is launched and culminates, in May 2007, in the foundation of the Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability, which promotes and financially supports the Movement.

For the first time in Ilhabela, the Movement for a More Beautiful Island organizes activities related to the World Carfree Day, which is now held on an yearly basis.

• october 2007 At its official launch, which was logistically, legally and financially supported by the Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability, Movement for a More Beautiful Island presents to the local population, tourists and vacationers, the results of the IBOPE Survey to inform them about how Ilhabela and its quality of life is perceived. |

The Movement for a More Beautiful Island presents to the City Council a bill proposing a change in the city bylaws whereby Mayors would be obliged, within 90 days of taking office, to present a detailed governmental plan based on indicators, goals and a system of periodical performance reviews. |

The Project “Education for Voting” presents the survey “Vote Consciously”, carried out by the Institute IPSOS, offering voters in Ilhabela information about the importance of voting and the exercise of democracy and citizenship. The project was implemented via an integrated communication campaign which included a Vote Guide, theater performances, speeches and surveys on citizenship. |

The Movement for a More Beautiful Island sponsors and organizes the 1st Meeting on Permanent Dialogue with SABESP (governmental agency in charge of water supply, sewage collection, treatment and disposal) so the community could keep up on, and actively participate in, the solution of one of Ilhabela´s most pressing problems which is sewage collection, treatment and disposal.
The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability backs up the “Project Marinas for Environmental Education” from CETESB (State of São Paulo Environmental Agency) sponsoring the printing of booklets. |

The Movement for a More Beautiful Island presents the results of the 2nd IBOPE Survey on Citizenship Perception, which measures how the population perceives the city and identifies what the wishes are for an improvement in the quality of life; additionally, it shows a comparison with the previous survey and a monitoring of the evolution of these indicators.

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability, with its own resources, in partnership with the Secretary of Environment and the city administration, implements several structural improvements such as a bridge and an observation deck in the Gato Trails, Castelhanos Bay, as part of the Projeto Ilhabela Parque (Ilhabela Park Project) in conjunction with the Projeto Ecoturismo na Mata Atlântica (Ecotourism Project for the Atlantic Rainforest) and the Projeto Trilhas de São Paulo (São Paulo Trails Project). This is a pilot project that will serve as a model for the development of ecotourism as a means of generating income for the traditional communities. |

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability holds a meeting of over 300 people at the Oceanographic Institute of the Sao Paulo University, in São Paulo, to discuss the expansion plans for the São Sebastião seaport which includes a container terminal. |

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability, in partnership with RealNorte, an entity that represents several social-environmental organizations from the state of Sao Paulo northern coast, launches the campaign “Port yes, containers no”, to challenge the expansion project and to have it adapted to the reality of the region which is primarily touristic. |

Publication of the communication piece “Exercising Citizenship”, as an insert to the local newspaper, reaching a substantial part of the population, and hence initiating the awareness actions of the workgroup “Education for Citizenship”, aiming at mobilizing the society, disseminating concepts, and encouraging sustainability and citizenship practices. There were six such publications, each focusing on a different theme.

The workgroup from the Movement for a More Beautiful Island in charge of Education for Citizenship begins a training program with community health agents and agents dedicated to fight dengue (a tropical disease prevalent in Ilhabela) on techniques to disseminate citizenship and sustainability practices in Ilhabela. |

The Government of São Paulo State through the Environmental and Transport Secretaries, impressed by the debate generated, suspends the expansion project of the São Sebastião port; this decision may be considered as a landmark for those who defend the Environment and Sustainable Development.
It also represents a major achievement of the Civil Society which has an increasing participation in those decisions that may have an impact upon the community.
The Movement “Port Yes, Container No” expects that any project that may cause an impact on the quality of life of those living in the four cities of the Northern Coast of the São Paulo State focuses on development in a sustainable fashion, and also expects that it be discussed with the Civil Society.
The expansion project of the São Sebastião Port is suspended so new, better and deeper studies may be conducted.

The Movement for a More Beautiful Island launches the bi-monthly newspaper “O Farol da Ilha” (The Island´s Lighthouse) with the following objectives: to raise awareness among the Ilhabela population about the place where they live, to inform about activities that promote citizenship and sustainability, to spread out values that are of benefit to collective interest and to open up a new communication channel with the population. |

Seminars: Intermunicipal Arrangements, Cooperation and Consortiums. This initiative of the Institute Ilhabela Sustentável, representing RealNorte, led to the organization of three meetings of the four cities of the Northern Coast to discuss common problems and the sustainable development of the region. |

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability is one of the founders of the Observatório Social de Ilhabela (Ilhabela Social Observatory) with the mission of becoming an instrument of citizenship and of providing the means for the participation of the society in monitoring the use and application of city resources by the public power. |

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability and Movement for a More Beautiful Island present, in their yearly event, the results of the 4th IBOPE Survey, covering an evaluation of public services and the perception about important issues. In the same event, the Mayor and his secretaries reviewed their performance against objectives included in the Plan of Objectives; it is also launched the ‘cartões da cidadania’ (citizenship cards) with the objective of encouraging the participation of the population in the decisions and actions that will affect the present and future of Ilhabela. |

The Ilhabela Institute for Sustainability applies a questionnaire to candidates in the election for public office posts in the Northern Coast, covering issues of fundamental importance, and circulates the results among the population so citizens will be better prepared to make an informed option.
